An American Pastoral Scene is a Story Mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This is one of the "Main Quests" of the game and players must complete it to advance the Story. Completing Story Missions opens up Stranger Missions as well as additional content throughout the game.

Micah's Plans
Arthur Morgan (you) finds Micah Bell camping in the mountains near the Taxidermist House in New Elizabeth. He plans to make his wrongdoings right by proposing you two rob a bank wagon that passes into Strawberry. You agree to the task and ride off together.
When you get to the hit spot, you stop by a ridge to ambush them. Once Micah spots them in the distance, it's go time.
This is a Robbery!?
You ride down to the carriage and confront the drivers and all the guards around it. There should be less than 10, making this wave fairly standard. Once they're all dead, ride shotgun on the wagon as Micah drives back to the camp.
As you're passing the river, a tree collapses in front of you. Now you're being robbed! This causes Micah to steer straight into the river and total the wagon. The horses escape and now you have to defend against the masked O'Driscolls. Once you defeat all of them, you concede the wagon and instead shoot the lock off the back to pick up the lock box inside.
You open the lock box to find a total of $1,200, half of which goes to the camp, and you and Micah split the rest.
