Gainful Employment is a Story Mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This is one of the "Main Quests" of the game and players must complete it to advance the Story. Completing Story Missions opens up Stranger Missions as well as additional content throughout the game.

Old Friends
John Marston (you) sees Sadie Adler in the Saloon in Valentine being harassed by two men. Before you can interfere, she makes quick work of them both then greets you like an old friend. She tells you about a bounty you can track down for some money in Strawberry, then ride off with her. You speak along the way about Micah Bell's whereabouts. You also speak about what's happened since you last saw each other.
Catching Kirk
When you arrive, you're instructed to look around to try to find the bounty: Nathan Kirk, 45, a bald banker. Ask either the General Store or the Post Office clerk, they'll direct you to the Welcome Center which will become outlined as an area of interest on the map. Ask the hotel owner and you'll find out he's staying in a room upstairs. You'll find him in the room next to the bath. When you reach the door, you'll knock and say you're a friend. Kick the door down and you'll see him jump off the balcony and onto a horse, tripping Sadie in the process. Jump off and onto your horse to begin your chase.
Chase the bounty icon on the map and once you reach him, use your Lasso to subdue him. Once you have him, mount him on Sadie's horse and she'll let you know when she gets the money for him. She also lets you know to find her in the Blackwater Saloon, for another job.
