The First Shall Be Last is a Story Mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This is one of the "Main Quests" of the game and players must complete it to advance the Story. Completing Story Missions opens up Stranger Missions as well as additional content throughout the game.
The First Shall Be Last Mission Details
Following a tip-off on Sean's whereabouts, Arthur, Trelawny, Javier and Charles track Ike Skelding's bounty hunters up the Upper Montana River and attempt to rescue Sean.
The First Shall Be Last Objectives
- Silently kill the Bounty Hunters by the river with Javier
- Shoot the rope to free Sean
- Get 10 headshots
- Complete the mission without taking any health items

Intel
Arthur Morgan (you) find Javier Escuella and Charles Smith laying on a cliff, overlooking Blackwater. They attempt to contort a plan to free Sean Mcguire while waiting for Josiah Trelawny to come back with more information. He does and everyone learns that there will only be one chance to intercept him, and that's tonight when they transport him to a federal prison via the area north of where you are.
Ambush & Blitz
A plan is set in motion, and you ride off to the area on interest in Upper Montana. Once here, follow Josiah's lead for a while until he tells you to pull up your binoculars to see the situation better. Once the men below leave, and only two remain, Josiah will distract the men while you get into position with Javier to ambush them. When you do, two will remain ahead. Taking them out will ensue a gunfight with the rest of their gang.
Fight your way through the canyon with Javier then you'll see Charles fighting off a couple guys on the cliff above. Run up on the left to get to him, taking out two more enemies before you reach him. Once all banded together, head forward to the cabin where you'll need to shoot through more bounty hunters, and find Sean hanging from his feet on a tree. Cut him down, and share a bit of banter before everyone splits up to return to camp. You stay to loot the place.
