The Tool Box Walkthrough

Build-A-House

John Marston (you) speaks to Albert Cakes in Blackwater. You speak to him about purchasing a pre-cut house, as mentioned by Uncle in Home Improvement for Beginners. He asks you to pick one, and you do and give him your bank credit to pay for it. Once it's agreed, it cuts to showing a few men helping you load the pre-cut wood onto two wagons. Charles Smith shows up and tells you about his encounter with a man who was attacked on the way to the farm by Skinner Brothers. He also tells you he's hired two men for protection, Mr. Devon and Mr. Wayne, the latter will be riding with you.

You'll need to head up to Manzanita Post to see a Norwegian man by the name of Nils, about some tools to build your house. Charles will lead the way on the wagon ahead, so follow his lead. On your way, you have quite a funny conversation with the hired gun Mr. Wayne, as he assumes you have no experience on gunfights and talks you through the whole experience of being a hired-gun.

When you arrive at Nils's location, exit the wagon and head over to Nils, highlighted by a point of interest. When you find Nils, Mr. Wayne will introduce you and ask for tools. His limited English will only allow him to respond with "Okay" most of the time but he grabs a tool box and stows it on your wagon, then sends you on your way.

Take Me Home

Follow Charles's lead back to your ranch at Beecher's Hope. Shortly after leaving Nils's place though, Mr. Wayne will get shot with an arrow in the shoulder and you'll all have to stop the wagons and take cover. You take cover behind a fallen tree and have to defend against the Skinner Brothers emerging from the trees.

Kill all of them, and they will begin popping up from behind. Adjust your cover accordingly then kill all of them. Once you do, you'll check to see if they stole anything and you're almost in the clear until Mr. Devon points out that they took Mr. Wayne and the tools you've just acquired. You tell him to stay to watch over the wagons while you and Charles give chase.

Follow Charles's lead until you run into more of them, then continue with the Skinner massacre -worth noting that there will be a couple Skinner Brothers hiding in the trees at this point, and killing all of them with a headshot will allow you to unlock the Gold Medal for this mission. Once you've killed them all here, follow Charles's lead to find Mr. Wayne, killing more Skinner Brothers along the way.

You first find the tools in the area of interest, and just as you turn to ask where Mr. Wayne is, you find him stuck to a tree with a knife through his face. Pick up the toolbox and head back to the wagons, marked by a point of interest on the map. Drop the tool box on the back of your wagon and continue back to your ranch. On your way back, you find out more about the Skinner Brothers inhabiting the area.

Once you arrive back at your ranch, you return to find Uncle asleep and then proceed to unload all the wagons. Charles tells you he'll take Mr. Devon back to town with Mr. Wayne's body, after you're finished with the unloading. The screen fades to black and reappears with you sat at a campfire with Charles, and a memory of your wife narrates in your head.
