American Distillation is a Story Mission in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). This is one of the "Main Quests" of the game and players must complete it to advance the Story. Completing Story Missions opens up Stranger Missions as well as additional content throughout the game.
American Distillation Mission Details
Arthur, Dutch and Bill become temporarily deputized citizens of Scarlett Meadows County as they help Deputy Archibald shut down a moonshine distillery and steal a wagonload of the Braithwaites' moonshine.

Arthur Morgan (you) walks into the Sheriff's Office in Rhodes to find Dutch Van Der Linde and Bill Williamson drinking with Sheriff Gray. As the Sheriff drunkenly stumbles out of the office, you, Dutch, and Bill accompany deputy Archibald Macgregor on his search for moonshine stills around. You ride shotgun on the deputy's wagon, and you learn a little more about the Lemoyne Raiders and about the infamous family rivalry.
On your journey, you come across a broken down stage coach which you and the deputy investigate. He concludes the hit was probably the result of a group of Lemoyne Raiders as you ride off. You stop at a swampy area and proceed to find a hideout. You split up and go with Bill, and are given the option to go either left or right (doesn't make a difference). When you choose, you'll identify the targets on the map, taking one out while Bill does the other. Once you've knocked the Moonshiner out, hogtie him to pick him up and drop him at the wagon with the rest of them.
Explosive Alcohol
The deputy will then require you to blow the Moonshiner camp up with some Dynamite. When you blow it up, waves of Lemoyne Raiders will flood you from the direction of the explosion. Fight through them and when they've all been killed, make your way back to Dutch. A scene will play where the deputy tries to take what's left of the moonshine but Dutch talks his way into taking all of it and leaving just one for the deputy.
Bill rides back to camp bringing the wagon full of moonshine while you and Dutch ride back on your horses. After a short chat Dutch proposes a race to camp which you can accept or reject. One just gets you back to camp quicker, to end the mission.
